Join us for a round-table discussion on writing about art with contemporary art curators James Glisson (SBMA) and Alexandra Terry (MCASB), artist Nathan Hayden and Debra Herrick, editor and co-founder of Lum Art Magazine, as moderator.
We look forward to a lively conversation on the relationship between artists and writers; different practices and approaches to writing about art; and what editors look for in pitches for publication.

About the Speakers
James Glisson is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA). His recent publications and exhibitions include True Grit: American Prints 1900-1950 (Stephanie Schrader, co-curator), Nineteen Nineteen (Jennifer A. Watts, co-curator) and Becoming America: The Jonathan and Karin Fielding Collection of Folk Art. His projects have been covered by the Guardian, Los Angeles Times, El País (Madrid), Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Review of Books. Glisson’s recent contribution to Lum Art Mag is a compelling cultural critique inspired by the films of Adam Curtis.
Alexandra Terry is Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB), where she has organized exhibitions by Shana Moulton, Genevieve Gaignard, Barry McGee, Beatriz Olabarietta and Brian Rochefort. Terry’s piece, “Pranks of Destiny,” in Lum Art Mag’s Winter 2021 print issue, is an interview with artist Maysha Mohamedi in which they explore the artist’s practice and current project at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles: The BIPOC Abstractionists Directory Initiative.
Nathan Hayden is a Santa Barbara-based artist whose large-scale paintings of modern geometric abstractions and recent sculptural work are drawn from patterns and forms that he finds in nature and illuminate explorations into mysticism and wonder. Hayden’s work was featured on the cover of the latest print issue of Lum Art Mag which also included a studio visit to his Lower Lodge residency.
Debra Herrick is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Lum Art Magazine. She holds a PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and has written about art and culture throughout the US, Latin America and Europe.
