Retrospective at Elverhøj Museum, Solvang
By Kit Boise-Cossart
An inspiring side of humanity is currently on view in the Solvang art gallery of the Danish museum of immigrants, the Elverhøj. The exhibit Past, Present, & Future celebrates the museum's thirtieth anniversary with the largest number of artists represented in a single show in the museum’s history.
The process of selecting representative artwork for the show must have been a difficult process for Elverhoj’s Executive Director Esther Bates and art consultant Rita Ferri as they culled through work from over the years at the Elverhøj by artists young, old and those now gone.
The curators’ choices include 3D practical (Chair by Bud Tullis) to 2D conceptual (Kam Jacoby’s transfer print Madam Ruby’s), paintings from abstract figurative (Ann Raleigh’s acrylic Harbor in Cornwall), to totally abstract (Jim Farnum’s oil Backside of Nowhere).
Allegorical pieces hearken to myths, druids and elves with the clay sculpture Persephone by Lindy Kern, Rick James Marzullo’s hand-cut Dance on Elves Hill and Martha Mott’s oil Birth of Spring.
Perhaps the most subtle, stunning and transcendent work is the oil on panel Solitude by Eyvind Earle, echoing elements of Karen Jensen’s Shroud of Rose and Phoebe Brunner’s two Seeding oil on panels.
In all the pieces displayed there is an impressive depth and commitment of the artists at work, an intimate and uplifting exhibit, not to miss.
Past, Present and Future: Celebrating 30 Years of Art in the Community is on exhibit from Aug. 25 to Nov. 11 at the Elverhøj Museum, 1624 Elverhoy Way, Solvang.
